　　Starting from March 1st all children at all of our campuses will begin a month-long culture focused theme on understanding culture around the world.

　　对于所有的人类来说，母语是最珍贵的交流和表达工具。世界未来的发展正是依靠了语言的传递，才能将所有的经历和经验一代又一代地传承下去。

　　For the world, native languages are one of the most precious resources for communication and sustainability, both locally and internationally. The future growth and development of the next generations depend on how they are able to construct identity while using all of the resources that our generation can preserve for their future.

　　In today’s modern world, where children and families often travel around the world for work, and where multicultural, multilingual families are gradually transforming our future concept of mother language, our schools are striving to build global citizens – we hope to empower the children through mastery of English and Chinese, two of the world’s most spoken languages. But, at the same time, we hope to value and embrace the children’s own rich language background and identity.

　　3月，我们将迎来为期一个月的“多元文化月”的主题教学活动，让我们先来看看海富幼儿园中孩子们语言的情况吧。

　　As we prepare to soon celebrate World Cultures with a month-long theme focused on Understanding Culture, we took the time to check and understand Fortune Kindergartens from this perspective.

　　Here are our findings:

　　Our eleven Local Bilingual Streams, at Longyang, YaoHua, Jin Taiyang, OCT, TianDi, Sentosa, Shidai, Xin Lichen, Wuxi, HongKou, Yulin are now enrolling children from nine different native language backgrounds. With a majority of 2628 children speaking native Mandarin, our local streams also teach native speakers of Japanese (2) , Korean (5), Hindi (2), German (2), Portuguese (1), English (9), Italian (1), Tagalog (1).

　　Our two International Bilingual Streams, at Dongfang and Hongqiao, are now enrolling children from 22 different native language backgrounds. At the two international streams a total of 245 children speak native Chinese, with a high percentage of these children also speaking a second and third language at home. The total of speakers of other native languages is 136 children, with the following mother languages being spoken at our schools: English (57), German (8), Russian (7), Uzbek (1), Swedish (3), Serbian (2), Spanish (5), Dutch (9), Japanese (18), Tagalog (2), Italian (1), Thai (2), Malay (1), French (1), Urdu (2), Portuguese (2), Korean (6), Hindi (7), Cantonese (1), Tamil (1), Marathi (1), Danish (1) , Latvian (1)

　　在即将进入每年一次的文化和语言艺术的庆典时，我们希望再一次提醒家长们，中英文的在校学习只是每一个孩子语言学习和发展的一小部分。在校的学生只有很少的一部分在家会同时使用中英文双语，绝大部分的孩子们都只使用单语在家进行沟通。目前还有96位孩子在家是使用第三甚至于第四语言进行沟通的，而海富幼儿园是他们第一次接触中英文的学习场所。

　　As we prepare for this yearly celebration of culture and language, we hope to remind our parents and our community that experiencing our bilingual English – Chinese curriculum at school is only one part of every child’s language learning and development. A very small percentage of our learners are able to experience the whole curriculum in their own two home languages (English and Chinese). The majority of our learners are either experiencing our teaching as CFL learners or as EFL learners. Furthermore, a total number of 96 children are third and fourth language learners. For them both English and Chinese are foreign languages that they have most often started learning at Fortune Kindergarten for the first time.

　　丰富而多样的语言和文化背景是实现海富课程发展和实践的良好资源和挑战。我们的老师们专注于支持孩子们语言的学习和发展，将中英文双语作为孩子们每日学习的共同语言。

　　为了保证孩子们提高中英文双语的学习效果，仅仅是学校的语言学习来说是远远不够的，他们需要家长在学校以外能继续关注和支持孩子们的学习，并将这两种语言包容进每日的家庭交流语言中。

　　This rich and diverse linguistic and cultural background is both a wonderful resource and a great challenge for our curriculum development and implementation. Our teachers are constantly focusing on supporting the children’s language learning and development, with English and Chinese sharing an equally important role in the children’s daily learning experiences.

　　However, our work at school is not enough – not only our third and fourth language speakers, but also all children continue to need all the parents’ attention and support in order to acquire strong English-Chinese bilingual skills and maintain close connection with home languages.
